MIX & 5 Minutes With... Razor-N-Tape
Midnight Magic’s perennial disco anthem “Beam Me Up” announced itself as an instant classic from the moment of its release in 2010, and at long last the band has teamed up with fellow Brooklynites Razor-N-Tape for a 10-year-anniversary package (minus one lost year) that once again establishes the timeless quality of the song with a fresh and versatile package of new remixes.
We caught up with the guys behind the NY label and they kindly put together a top drawer mix for the Mix Series...
1. Give us the lowdown on this release. Talk us through the making of it? Tell us a little about Midnight Magic.
Midnight Magic are a fixture on the Brooklyn scene and when our friend Andrew Raposo brought this project to us over a year ago we were super excited. Prins Thomas was one of our first choices to remix the classic track, and he created such a beautifully musical mix, it’s almost like a new original version. Kim Ann is a long time friend of the band, and she took the track in a deeper and darker direction, and fellow Brooklynites Each Other (Max Pask and NYC dance music royalty Justin Strauss) went straight peak time rave with it.
2. If you had to pick one, what would be the Razor-N-Tape biggest career highlight to date?
Well, we are coming up on our milestone 100th release across our different imprints, which is pretty exciting. Our big 5-year anniversary party at Elsewhere in Brooklyn was a big moment for us as well...we had the whole club packed out and some amazing artists including Session Victim (Live), Al Kent, Mood II Swing, Jacques Renault and more. Was an amazing night!
3. If we were allowed to be out partying, what current records would you be playing out at every set?
Here in NY we are just about allowed to party haha! Here are a few that will be in heavy rotation for us this summer:
4. What's coming up next for you?
We’ve got releases of all-original music from Sentimental Animals (a new project by JKriv and Dicky Trisco), Kokoro Disco San, JKriv, Clive From Accounts, Jungle Fire and more. Look for some big album projects in 2022 from Felipe Gordon and Cody Currie, as well!
5. If you could spend 5 minutes with anyone, who would it be and why?
JKriv - I’d love to chat with Quincy Jones, or get in the studio with him explaining how he made some classic albums. Larry Levan would be a great one too...but I’m not sure 5 minutes would be enough!
