5 Minutes With... YAW EVANS

Yaw Evans is an electronic music artist from South London known for his new and experimental approach to House, UKG, Jungle, Ambient and UK techno.

Creatively inspired by London, Yaw’s distinctive electronic style is explorative, merging textures of his city's culture, music and identity into his sound.

These influences have coalesced to form his debut album, 'Memories of Now', of which 'Respect Yeah Yeah is Track 1, forthcoming on Mystery Circles. Check out the Premiere below and see what he had to say when we chatted with him...

1. Give us the lowdown on this release...

For my debut release I wanted to create a set of tracks that spanned the various genres of electronic music that I love, I didn't want to be confined to a set of tempos, or genres. But I did want to have a theme throughout the project. The theme is really the use of field recordings. I’ve used them as a way of evoking memories of a given time or place. There are recordings from my local underground station, local market streets and clips from old pirate radio sets. There's a recording from a smoking area of rave (remember those? lol), which forms a lot of the atmosphere in the pre-order track ‘Lion Paw’.

The title track is inspired by my fathers dementia. I wanted to create a sense of confusion in that piece. There’s heavily filtered vocals, which repeat over time but for the most part you can’t quite understand what they are saying. So you're not quite sure if you remember hearing it from earlier on in the track, or if it’s something new.

All the tracks were made during the first lockdown, using my modular synth and groove boxes, and I think their quite an intense and raw listen because of that. They're not overly polished or produced and the final track 512 (named after the Roland 512 VCO), was recorded in one take. It was me basically hitting record and committing to the audio coming out of the machines.

2. If you had to pick one, what would be your biggest career highlight to date?

It’s having music released with a record label. That was a personal goal that I set myself when I first started trying to make music. The 14 year old me would be very happy right now. Big up David from Mystery Circles!

3. If we were allowed to be out partying, what current records would you be playing out at every set?

Everything U Need - Overmono

Take it Further - Bakey

Exhale (Sully Remix) - Last Japan, feat Killa P, Sully

4. What's coming up next for you?

I’m in the middle of writing a modular garage/two step project. The jams I've posted to my I.G have had wicked response, so I'm really looking forward to getting the finished tracks out there. And Hopefully a few live gigs when the restrictions finally ease up!

5. If you could spend 5 minutes with anyone, who would it be and why?

It would have to be with Dr Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points. I was at his Printworks show at the end of last year and that gig literally blew my mind, it changed my view of what’s possible in the live world of live electronic music forever. I would probably need more than five minutes of his time, but I’ll take what I can get.
