5 Minutes With... SMOOVE & TURRELL

The release of Smoove & Turrell’s sixth studio album ‘Stratos Bleu’ saw them deep dive in to a variety of electronic genres and sounds that in their previous work they had subtly hinted at. Nods to disco, downtempo, hip hop, breaks and rave are all there on show and the new approach on the album proved to be a hit with the fans and critics alike.

Support from BBC Radio 2 and a BBC 6 Music ‘Album Of The Day’ ensured a well-deserved #1 in the Official UK Dance Charts on release week and now, the crew of larger than life North East musicians are back for more with a slew of fantastic remixes from some top tier talent.

Anyone keeping tabs on the disco world at the moment will know of the momentous talent that is Ray Mang. After building an enviable reputation within the disco world he came to the attention of the wider mainstream media with an earth-shattering remix of Phenomenal Handclap Band - Judge Not which was a sleeper hit ending up on many ‘best of’ lists in 2018 (and 2019 for that matter).

On this release he takes on Smoove & Turrell’s lead single and slap-happy funk-fest - ‘Do It’ and transforms it into a disco roller. Both vocal and instrumental versions are dance floor dynamite as Mang traverses the line between classic and new perfectly.

Check it out below and see what Smoove & Turrell had to say when we grabbed 5 Mins with them....

1. Give us the lowdown on this release…

Smoove: I buy a lot of new records and Ray Mang’s name kept cropping up on a lot of these releases, so it felt like the natural thing to do was invite Ray to remix our disco tinged single ‘Do It’!

John Turrell: My brother was a huge fan of Ray Mang and he would always put his tunes on his mixes he’s just got that groove. He was one of the first names we discussed when we thought of who to invite to remix the album.

2. If you had to pick one, what would be your biggest career highlight to date?

Smoove: Playing with Nile Rogers on three occasions was pretty special, I would say that was way up there!

John Turrell: Yeah definitely spending time with Nile. Although meeting Robert Plant and chatting with him at BBC Radio 2 was an absolute top encounter for me, as I am a huge Zeppelin fan.

3. If we were allowed to be out partying, what current records would you be playout out every set?

Sub Focus - Turn Back Time (Special Request Remix)

'We hammered this track in our summer festival season last year as it has a great old school feel.'

Paul Epworth - Voyager 2

We also love this. Epic track!

Shaun Escoffery - Days Like This ( Spinna & Ticklah Club Mix)

Everything about this is fantastic and it rocks a dancefloor

4. What’s coming up next for you?

We just finished having our new album ‘Stratos Bleu’ remixed by some amazing artists such as Hot Toddy, Ashley Beedle, Ray Mang and Fouk. Some of the remixes were done by some up and coming artists, like Sorley and Rayka, which are incredible too! We also hope to perform the album live with a full tour starting later this year and running into 2021 but let’s see what happens...

5. If you could spend '5 Minutes With…' anyone, who would it be and why...?

Smoove: Quincy Jones to pick his brains on production as he’s a genius

John Turrell: I’d probably want to pop back in time and meet Rick James he was the boy!
