5 Minutes With... BOSQ

Medellín based producer Bosq is set to return to his Bacalao label with Afro-Disco bomb “Wake Up” this week. It's a 4 track 12” focusing on the musical intersections between Colombia, West Africa and vintage styles born in the United States like Disco, Funk & Jazz... so you know it's going to be lively!

Ahead of the release we grabbed 5 Minutes With him... 1. Give us the lowdown on this release…

It’s a bit of a mix just like everything I do! but very focused on the connections between Afro Colombian music, West African Music, all mixed together with Disco / Funk & Jazz. I hope that doesn’t sound too academic because it’s definitely ass shaking music at heart. As always it’s important to me to push authenticity and not just be a musical tourist so here I’m working with Beninese singer Kaleta & Colombian folkloric music legend Justo Valdez from Palenque.

2. What's your best career moment to date, aside from this interview?

One that sticks out is when I was working in a makeshift studio in Puerto Rico in sort of a back storage room of my friends bar (La Factoria) and the legend himself Roberto Roena stopped by to hear what I was working on. I played him an in progress track and told him it was majorly influenced by his work. He listened for a minute and said basically “it’s cool except the cowbell isn’t right”. I was like oh ok well thanks anyways for listening… not realizing he wanted to overdub his own cowbell take right then and there! He had me run (literally) down the block in Old San Juan and pick up his cowbell from his son, run back and then we did it in like 2 takes all the way through. Of course my phone died like 6 seconds into filming him play but the important thing is we got the audio.

3. What's been doing the business when playing out recently? (Your biggest percy)

Well, before all this hit… is it too shameless to say my own new release?! Haha. I’ve been testing new stuff out recently and Wake Up get’s the craziest response from people, they’ve been responding like it’s a record they know and were waiting to hear even though I know no one has!

4. Where can we find you in the upcoming months?

You can find me here in my home studio in Medellin under government mandated quarantine with all my tours cancelled :( hopefully I get some good music out of it though!

5. If you could spend '5 Minutes With...' anyone, who would it be and why…?

I'm gonna limit myself to the living and say - Stevie Wonder! Give me a 5 minute chord progressions lesson please Stevie.
